Independent Medical Education (IME) Program

Clinical App Integration

Promoting the Meaningful Integration of Mental Health Apps into Schizophrenia Care through Provider Assisted App Selection

This Independent Medical Education Program made possible by the support of Boehringer Ingelheim. It seeks to equip mental health care providers (or anyone interested) with the knowledge and tools to meaningfully integrate mental health applications into their clinical workflow through up-to-date, evidence-based digital medical education. We aim to leverage the abundance of mobile applications to help address current treatment gaps and improve patient outcomes in schizophrenia care and mental healthcare at large.

About our Program

With an estimated 10,000 on the market, mental health apps are well recognized for their potential to improve accessibility and quality of schizophrenia care, and mental health care at large. Apps incorporate tools that address key treatment goals and challenges, such as: medication adherence reminders, evidence-based psychoeducation, and sustainable interventions for daily symptom management (journaling, meditation, goal-setting, mood tracking, etc.). To fully harness the potential of apps, it is critical to integrate them into routine clinical care. While there is high interest among both clinicians and patients to do so, there are few existing resources or educational materials for clinicians to learn about apps, find trustworthy ones, and use them with patients. To facilitate this process and instill clinicians with the knowledge, confidence, and TOOLS to integrate apps into care, our team has created several clinical app integration resources, and compiled all of the information in this educational program.

Our Goal

The long-term goal of our project is to incorporate patient-centered technology tools such as mobile apps into integrated primary care settings to improve the mental health and overall health status of underserved patients experiencing psychosis, or other mental health symptoms. To achieve this, there is a critical need to provide mental health clinicians with the knowledge, confidence, and tools to feasibly integrate mental health apps selection and recommendation into their clinical workflow.
